Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF in one bold weight in three widths. Thirteen alternate capitals were designed by Sol Hess for Monotype in 1927 and offered as Modernized Alternate Gothic (a.k.a. Excelsior Gothic).
The bold weights of Linotype’s Trade Gothic are very similar.
There are various digitizations. ATF Alternate Gothic (Mark van Bronkhorst, Alan Dague-Greene, David Sudweeks, Igino Marini, Ben Kiel for ATF Collection, 2015) is a major expansion that spans ten weights in four widths.
