Originated at Lettering Inc. in the 1930s and “dramatically expanded throughout the lifetime of the company”. [Font Bros] Originally identified by numerical codes including 240 and 220 (upright) and 340 and 320 (oblique) in 1951 and later X210 and X220, followed by a digit indicating the weight. [Specimens]
Digitally revived by Neil Summerour “from the original font glass masters from the 1940s” and released in 2013 as Directors Gothic. The family comprises 90 styles, organized in five subfamilies of increasing width (210, 220, 230, 240, 250), all in nine weights plus obliques, with alternates. The digital fonts don’t match (all iterations of) the original in all details.
