Initially designed in 2001 as a companion to Surveyor for the exclusive use in Martha Stewart Living magazine. Inspiration included typewriter faces and Landi (see Welt-Antiqua), in particular its Corsivo styles for the italics. The original range of weights (Light through Bold) was extended by Andy Clymer and the team to three lighter weights [Frere-Jones]. While Frere-Jones describes the design as “very much a collaborative effort” between Hoefler and himself, Hoefler claims sole design credit, “with contributions from Tobias Frere-Jones, Jesse Ragan” and “additional material by Jordan Bell, Andy Clymer” [Hoefler].
