I mean not to doubt you, but i cannot seem to find much mention of either Stan Conform or Flare/Ebony anywhere else online, and I’m certainly curious how you got the fonts to make the examples. If you have them as a download, please let me know.
Hi Emily, this record cover is from the early 1980s, and was made with predigital fonts. Not all typeface designs have been digitized. When you go to our respective typeface pages, you often can find more info. For Stan Conform, I’m not aware of a digital version. The sample we show is made from a scan from an old type specimen. Several of the designs listed under Related Typefaces are available in digital form. For Flare and its oblique companion Ebony, the sample was made using OPTI Flare, for the lack of a better option. That font is a limited 1990s digitization by Castcraft, a company from Chicago that no longer exists, or at least no longer sells any font licenses. Their fonts are considered abandonware. OK for making a sample, but not good enough for any actual design work, in terms of technical quality, but also for moral and legal reasons.
thank you Florian! was aware these were pre-digital, just curious on how the process was done, thank you. needed these fonts for a personal project, but i can use whats all been mentioned and managed to recreate enough of Conform for what i need.
That’s great to hear! You probably found this yourself already: the Klingspor Museum has a pdf about designer Stan Davis, with a glyph set for Stan Control. It’s not exactly high-res, but thanks to the typeface’s geometric build, you can pretty easily redraw it, if necessary.
Well Florian, I recreated Conform on fontstruct. Here’s the link: fontstruct.com/fontstructio…
Thank you! I’ve added this info to the typeface page. Oh, and happy belated birthday, Bryson!
The Japanese serif typeface at the back cover bottom right is an oldstyle variant of Ishii Mincho, the weight used is most likely the MM-A-OKL code.
Added! It’s appreciated.
