The University of Derby, formerly known as Derby College, is a public research university located in Derby, United Kingdom. Founded in 1851, it was granted university status in 1992.
The university currently provides undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in various fields, such as arts, humanities, social sciences, business, law, engineering, health and social care, and education. It has multiple campuses across Derbyshire and offers online learning programs as well.
The university’s logo combines the brand mark, which depicts the three hills of Sunnyhill, Littleover, and Mickleover (a reference to the university’s location within Derbyshire), paired with a wordmark.
From the university’s brand guidelines for collaborative partners:
The three peaks in the logo symbolize its organizational ambitions and three main goals: excellence in applied research and enterprise, excellence in teaching, and excellence in professional practice/accreditation.
The rectangular shape of the brand’s mark is a visual metaphor for the university being a “window onto the world” for its students, representing its outward looking, forward-thinking approach to teaching.
Early 2018, their logo was redesigned – designers yet unknown. If you have more info, please leave a comment! The peaks remained, but the previous wordmark, set in two styles of Palatino, was replaced by a newer one, set in two justified lines using Tiempos. The previous logo remains in use on location entrances; the new look is paired with Neuzeit-Grotesk as the main typeface for all communication.
