Pacific is an album featuring instrumental compositions by three great names of Japanese jazz and funk; Haruomi Hosono 細野晴臣, Shigeru Suzuki 鈴木 茂, and Tatsuro Yamashita 山下達郎. It’s a summer-themed album with titles reminding of the ocean: “Coral Reef”, “Nostalgia Island“, “Cosmic Surfin’”, …

The design of the cover by Tsuguya Inoue 井上嗣也 is simple: a photo taken by Shimpei Asai in helicopter view and a title without particular design in italic Futura Condensed. We find several times the design of Pacific often at the top of the visuals and in big sizes.

  1. I recently read an article about techno-kayō and its influences. Several cultural and aesthetic questions about this Japanese genre rich in information. It allows to better understand the aesthetic project of Haruomi Hosono. The article highlights the cultural duality of this music genre between traditional music and pop music for The West between “High Brow” and “Low Brow”. It is part of this duality carried by the East and the West on this musical genre and on the Japanese cultural flowering. This image of an island as predominant an island which can recall this duality of reading with a reading of the West very radical and simple seeing Japan as an island and without more or then a more aesthetic glance on the influence of Haruomi Hosono and the music of the islands that it is that of the Japanese archipelago or extra oriental.

I invite the amateurs of Haruomi Hosono or of the Japanese poetry in general to read this article: “Digitalove : le techno kayō ou la pop japonaise à son pinacle” by Olivier Lamm
