Nifty: Clean & Organized
Halyard Display is the typeface chosen for Nifty: Clean & Organized. Authored by the team of Nifty, a long-running column on Buzzfeed, the book offers a compilation of “money-saving hacks and easy DIYs for a clean and clutter-free home” in printed form.
Kelsey Nicholson, designer at Simon & Schuster, employed several styles of the Halyard family. For the cover title and the headings, she dialed up the “grotesque” side of Darden Studio’s workhorse sans, and specified the Black Italic, with its idiosyncratic forms that present a “weird combination of slant and rotation”, as Ellmer Stefan put it in his review for Typographica’s Favorite Typefaces. Halyard Display also serves for the many numbered lists found throughout the book. It’s paired with URW Franklin Gothic for text.
