    “Middenstand”, although literally meaning 'middle class’, has in Dutch the derived but nowadays prominent meaning of 'shopkeepers’ or, by extension, 'small business owners’. Judging from the other photos on the Flickr page, Van den Toorn is using it in this way (“Shopkeeping royalty”).

  2. Good point, Arthur, thanks! In German, we use Mittelstand with the same double meaning. I wasn’t aware that the English term doesn’t extend to the meaning of small and medium-sized businesses. (Now I wonder in which line of business you’re active, Meneer de Koning!)
