Note the slightly ragged ‘ry’ overlap … done with white gouache on the paste-up, or maybe even with an X-Acto knife.

The author, historian Eric Williams, was the first Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. This work, considered his masterpiece, was published in the US in 1944, but not till 1964 in the UK.
