Shown in Berthold’s 1896 Neuheiten-Probe as
Alexandra. Appears to be a copy of Washington
(Central, c.1886), but as bicolor set consisting of
Konturbuchstaben (outline) and Eindruckbuchstaben
(solid fill), and with some changes. Most notably, middle bars in
‘E’ and ‘F’ are short, terminal in ‘L’ doesn’t ascend as much, ‘M’
is wider and has a base middle serif, ‘W’ has descenders with
diagonal serifs and a top middle serif, ‘4’ has no top serif. The
outline style is shown in Petzendorfers Schriftenatlas
(1903–1905). No lowercase.
Berthold also had a solid style with lowercase under the name
Washington. It exhibits the same differences in the
capitals, and also is different from Central’s
Washington in the lowercase. [1909
specimen] The versions sold by Stempel and Lehmann (with
Cyrillics) as Washington appear to be based on
Berthold’s.
