I’m noticing some inconsistencies (anomalies) with kerning between the letterforms. Anybody have any thoughts on this? It seems like too big of a “universe” for that to be an accident.

  2. Star Girl, I think you may be noticing that the crawl is set in justified text, therefore the spacing between letters and words on each line (except the last in a paragraph) is adjusted to fit the width of the crawl. Similar to how text is set in newspaper columns, only here the adjusted spacing is magnified due to the size and perspective. Below is an image of the original acetate crawl from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back to give an idea of how it appeared before being filmed.

  3. Just for completeness, at least two prototype crawls based on early drafts of the film were filmed. The one on the left looks to be set in Trade Gothic Bold, whereas the one on the right uses Futura Extra Bold. The Star Wars logo featured on both of these crawls is a hand lettered design by Dan Perri.
