Richard Baringer at Bertha Schaefer Gallery poster
Poster for an exhibition of art by American painter Richard Baringer at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York City, September 24 thru October 12, 1963. In addition to being an artist, Baringer was also a designer who studied with László Moholy-Nagy and Walter Gropius.
The poster is a simple composition, with an image of Baringer’s art above a large white field with a single line of text set in Franklin Gothic Condensed at the very bottom. The word-spacing is especially loose, perhaps to justify the text to the full width of the poster at that size(?)
Most of the poster’s appeal is in the graphic, colorful qualities of Baringer’s art – the accompanying typography is relatively small relative to the format. But I still like how Franklin Gothic pairs with the bright, minimalist style of the work, especially in all caps.
