99+1 Japan. Traveling through Art, Design & Architecture
An interestingly traditional application of this otherwise rather quirky interpretation of Hermann Hoffmann’s art-nouveau classic Schwere Block (1920). Hammer’s glossy highlight extension is usually seen in a humorous or ironic context but somehow the bold font style fits in well with the otherwise reduced, zen-like graphic design.
99+1 JAPAN is a pocket publication and extensive website dedicated to creative experiences with travel. The “+1” for any trip in Japan is the unexpected location that makes the trip extra special, from a backstreet bookstore to a mountain hike into inspiring scenery. Ian Lynam designed the gatefold-cover book and website for the Japanese National Tourism Organization.
In addition to Hammer, both the book and the website use Dolly and Fakt, each in several styles. Japanese text is set in Axis in the printed publication, and Hiragino Kaku Gothic online.
