Going Steady by Pauline Kael
Seymour Chwast designed this type-only book cover for Going Steady: Film Writings 1968–1969, a collection of reviews written by celebrated film critic Pauline Kael following her first year at The New Yorker. Movies from 1968–69 including Funny Girl; The Producers; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; and Planet of the Apes are picked apart (with kindness, at times) by Kael. The book also includes a career-defining essay she wrote for Harper’s Magazine entitled “Trash, Art, and the Movies”. Kael left the The New Yorker in 1991. A documentary about Kael called What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael is currently in the works that details her importance to the American film community in the 20th century.
This is an early use for Push Pin Studios’s Filmsense (phototype that Chwast helped to design with Milton Glaser) as it wasn’t until 1971 that Photo-Lettering released it for photosetting.
