American Photographer was a monthly magazine, focusing on professional photography, that was in circulation from 1978 until 1990. Former Look Magazine art director Will Hopkins helped start the magazine in 1978, he also designed its original logo. The L&C Hairline/Futura combination wordmark was in place for most of the magazine’s run. While the company was owned by CBS Magazines, Hopkins and Cruz received the CBS Best Design Award for their remarkable work with the magazine. Former Associate Art Director Louis F. Cruz has a treasure trove of magazine covers on his company’s Facebook page. The magazine was renamed American Photo in 1990.

It’s worth noting that the American Photo, in print since 1990, is more of a relative to France’s Photo.
