I wonder if the secondary typeface is related to a typeface that is very similar to Corporate Gothic and, according to Patrick Concannan, was used in several books published by The Times Mirror Company from around 1975. Here’s a sample that Patrick provided, squeezed to about two thirds of its original width:

  2. It was definitely a custom corporate typeface. I believe the typeface was an adaption of Handel Gothic, designed by Donald J. Handel in 1965 and who worked for Saul Bass.
