The Home Depot is an American retailer of home improvement and construction products and services. Their logo has remained virtually unchanged since their founding in 1978.

  1. The logo currently in use (third image) dates only from 1999, which is really only a slightly tweaked revision of the original vision. The operating company behind The Home Depot was established in 1978, but the stores’ name and identity were not revealed until 1979.

The first printed record of the Home Depot name occurred on February 14, 1979 (its initial trademark filing gives its first use date as a day later), and the original version of the familiar square logo wouldn’t appear to the public until April 8, 1979 in a hiring advertisement. The first two stores opened on June 22, 1979.

The 1979 identity included rounded ends on the stenciled portion of each letter, and tighter spacing. The ends were changed to their standard angled shape in 1989, and the spacing of the lettering was modified in 1999.
*I darkened the logos because each one is a different shade of orange, likely due to differences in printing rather than a conscious change.

I’ve also researched and heavily contributed to this article which also includes many prototype names and sketches by Watt + Associates, pulled from a now-defunct page on the Home Depot corporate website.

  2. Top notch! Thanks, Ryan. I’ve added the design credits and adjusted the date.
