Cassandre’s Peignot Bold, used exclusively in its lowercase letters with their idiosyncratic mix of capital and lowercase forms. The three lines are set stacked and interlocked, cleverly taking into account the ascending and descending strokes.
The science fiction novel by British actor and writer Michael Elder (1931–2004) was first published in 1970 by Robert Hale. This is the paperback edition by Pinnacle Books from 1971.

I can imagine this choice was influenced by Ed Benguiat’s logo for Planet of the Apes from 1968.
Pinnacle Books used similar typography for another novel by Elder, The Alien Earth, also from 1971:
