  1. That’s an interesting find, Jack! There’s no doubt that this is Adobe Serif, nor that it is an ungainly sight.

    I wonder, though, whether in this case it’s really the fallback font trying to emulate a different font that failed to embed. Adobe Serif was also used for the Latin part of a number of Adobe’s Japanese fonts, including Kozuka Mincho, Heisei Mincho, and Ryo.

    Could it be the case that the designer consciously – if unwisely – opted for (the Latin part) of one of those Japanese fonts? The reasons I’m wondering:

    1. The letterforms don’t seem to deviate from their default proportions – as they would when Adobe Serif performs its shapeshifting magic in order to emulate a missing or broken font.

    2. It’s not a one-off occurrence: the cover of their Historical Atlas appears to use the same font.

  2. it would be interesting to look at the title page (usually it inherits the typeface)
