Worlding Ecologies. Art, Science and Activism Towards Climate Justice
How can art, science and institutional practices counteract the negative consequences of climate and ecological breakdown? How can these practices and ideas advance systemic change? Worlding Ecologies serves as an anthology of examples and wayward navigational tool, assembling eighteen authors exploring this question from their diverse backgrounds––as scientists, artists, philosophers, activists, theorists and curators––to rigorously approach urgent ecological challenges, including climate breakdown, pollution, biodiversity loss, environmental and social justice.
The Worlding Ecologies typeface and design are both inspired by illustrations to visualize hybrid networks in Bruno Latour’s We Have Never Been Modern (1991). These illustrations appear on pages 11 and 102 (see also the digitized copy hosted by Monoskop). Just as Latour’s work served as inspiration for many authors in Worlding Ecologies, I also drew from the shapes that appear in his work to create the design and typeface, devised specifically for this publication.
The book was edited by Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk and Eva Burgering and published by Valiz in collaboration with RADIUS, center for contemporary art and ecology. Supported by Mondriaan Fund, het Cultuurfonds and M.A.O.C. Gravin van Bylandt Stichting. The paperback has 256 pages and measures 24×16 cm. ISBN 978–94–93246–34–8
