“Novo Poder” playlist
This project is the practical part of the course Decoding Identities, from the Aprender Design school, taught by Carlos Bocai and Julia Aguiar. The assignment shown here is the development of a visual identity for the Spotify playlist “Novo Poder”, a national rap playlist.
Hip-hop is composed of four elements: break, graffiti, MC and DJ. Without these united elements, what we know as hip-hop or rap music could not exist. The emphasis since its inception has been community.
Thinking of visual elements that could fit the concepts of collectivity, union and complement, I noticed that placing the words “Novo” and “Poder” below each other, the letters O are in the exact same position when set in AC Bandit. Rotating one word at an angle of 45° and another at –45° I found the perfect fit, and simultaneously the visual concept of the playlist. One word complements the other, bringing this idea of bonding and unity that makes hip-hop happen.
Visual references and condensed typography were inspired by protest posters, bringing this imposing and striking tone. The color palette also emerged from the observation of old music posters with those marked degradations and strong and vibrant colors.
