Alphabet Lapidaire Monstre was originally shown by Jean Midolle around 1835. A simplified version – ALM Text, if you will – was used in 1971 on a poster for Fando and Lis.

Fando y Lis is the feature length directorial debut of Chilean-French film maker Alejandro Jodorowsky. It’s based on a 1958 play by Fernando Arrabal. Produced in Mexico, the surrealist film premiered at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival. The use of ALM here likely is a nod to Marcel Duchamp’s appropriation of Midolle’s typeface for La Septième face du dé from 1936.

The version from the poster (left), compared to the original by Midolle (right). The names inside the base serifs have been removed, and the level of ornamentation decreased.
