Fashion as a struggle for freedom
Ukrainian brand Jean Gritsfeldt showcased a new clothing collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion as part of the 2022 Berlin Fashion Week. Designer Jean Gritsfeld couldn’t attend the show due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, so he advised on how the show should unfold.
Before the show, a video appeared on screen where the designer addressed the guests.
“Today, as a designer, I choose fashion as my weapon; today, I fight for our future freedom. I hope for freedom for Ukraine and for all people on the planet. This is my strength and my mission,” emphasized the Ukrainian designer.
After Jean Gritsfeldt’s speech, sirens sounded, signaling an air raid alert. Models then presented the new collection in black, gray, beige, and white colors, featuring various inscriptions such as “language”, “light”, “Ukraine”, “respect”, “courage”, “happiness”, “freedom”, “unity”, “palyanycya”, and more. For the captions, the designer chose the Kalyna font from the Narbut alphabet revival, which, with its sharp and clear lines, emphasized the dramatic nature of the collection.
The show concluded with a model in a white dress carrying the Ukrainian flag during the joint exit of the models.
