  1. The letter A is a variant of Vanderburgh and Wells’s Phanitalian with the Tuscan flaring on the top and bottom.

  2. Thanks, Jay! I figured as much, but had hoped to find the name of that variant. Who knows, maybe it was a custom modification. As long as we don’t have a name, I’ve added Phanitalian.

  3. As I looked at page 141 of the American Wood Type book a year later, I found out that this Phanitalian has an ornamented version -  and voilà:

    Wells did show in 1877 a Phanitalian Ornamented which was unique with the company.

  4. Jay, I think that’s a great find. Thanks! Phanitalian Ornamented now has an entry in the database. For the time being, it’ll have to do without a sample.

    BTW, “the other Phanitalian” which originated at Page as No 132 now has a more accurate name – Phanitalian Ornamented No 2 – which is the trade name introduced by Wells. And now we know why it includes the “No 2” bit.
