Aretha Franklin – Soul ’69 album art
Aretha Franklin’s Soul ’69 is an album with cover versions of songs written by Big Maybelle, Percy Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Rudy Clark, and others. It was released in January 1969 by Atlantic Records, with a cover design by Loring Eutemey.
For the title line, he used a version of Thorowgood Sans Shaded, a design that goes back all the way to 1839. Chances are it’s PLINC’s adaptation named Sanserif Shade Blockshadow, which was made sometime in the mid-1960s. Eutemey already specified this typeface for another album cover in 1966 (and also was a fond user of the related Eightway). He had the letter bodies and the shadows colored in two shades of green, matching Franklin’s dress in the photograph by Jean-Pierre Leloir.
On the back cover, the shaded sans is used together with Melior Bold. Hermann Zapf’s sturdy roman is used for Ritchie Yorke’s liner notes, the track listing, and credits. Melior was also a recurring choice in Eutemey’s album designs.
