For Benzin Young Swiss Graphic Design Michel Fries and Thomas Bruggisser voyaged through Switzerland in search of a new generation of young Swiss graphic designers. What they find is a Swiss design scene as “hip” as anything in London or Berlin. Influenced by the famous “Swiss School” of the 1950s and 60s, young Swiss designers still hold concept and structure as functional beliefs, allowing artistic freedom in counterbalance to the service aspects of design.
The identity uses Cholla Slab, a sub-family from the Cholla typeface family. Designed in 1998–99 by Sibylle Hagmann, it is named after a species of cactus indigenous to the Mojave Desert. The capital B on the jacket, the stacked letters “BENZIN” on the spine, and the page numbers are set in Macaroni Medium, an unreleased typeface designed by Bastien Aubry.
