Eminence one the cover of a booklet of sheet music for “She Is Still a Mystery”, a song from The Lovin’ Spoonful’s 1967 album Everything Playing.
This typeface is an adaptation of the rimmed initials that accompanied Harper, designed by Gustave F. Schroeder for Central in 1882. It was shown in PLINC’s Art Nouveau Xenotypes 1895–1905 (1962) as Xenotype 3538 and later went by the name Eminence. It’s best known for its appearance on the cover of Black Sabbath’s debut album from 1970. Other type providers issued similar designs, see especially Manuscript Capitals (Letraset, 1972) and Abbey Scroll (Formatt, in or before 1974).
