Tate Etc. issue 44, Autumn 2018

Redesigned in 2017 and art directed by Studio Ard until 2020, Tate Etc. is an independent art magazine published three times a year by the Tate Gallery in London. […] Tate Etc. issue 44 coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement. To celebrate, Studio Ard invited type designer Julien Mercier to revive Fregio Mecano, a modular font of Italian origin designed in the mid 1920s. Mercier’s Nuovo Fregio Mecano is a variable font developed in five different weights and three different heights that allowed us to compose a variety of dynamic headlines across the magazine and on the cover.
Mercier’s revival is faithful to the model, but has some added OpenType features to create diversity with the modules. The other typefaces used in the magazine are the standard LL Medium by Robert Huber and Tate Etcentury Mono, likewise drawn by Mercier.
