Front cover

Album cover for Neil Diamond’s Greatest Hits as issued by MCA Records in a special edition for Deutscher Schallplattenclub. Cover designer Fritz Blankenhorn used Embrionic Triline for both the name of the artist and the title of the record, featuring different two–color combinations. Text is set in all caps, with the alternate swashed caps for the initials. Two interesting things are happening here: first, the N with a swash descending over the M in the second line. Second, the use of a swash alternate in the middle of the word “GREATEST”, as well as the joins in the EA pair and the EST “ligature” at the end.

Where does the great b/w shot come from? From ND? I would like a photo or similar. Please help. Thank you.

  2. Hello Birgit, the photo on the back cover is credited to TELDEC-Bildarchiv. I don’t know where and when it was taken. You can see a larger version here – apparently the photo was mirrored.

Some other uses of this photo and of a similar one suggest that it might have been taken during Neil Diamond’s 1976 tour, and possibly at the Sydney Sports Stadium. If that’s true, the 1974 date for the shown album cover can’t be accurate.
