The branding for the 2022 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational using Brik Regular by Burn Type, available via The Designers Foundry. The typeface is heavily modified with slanting, compression, stretching, pixelation and other effects The typeface is predominantly used within video formats. It’s paired with Colfax [it’s actually Grtsk, see comments] and what appears to be LL Akkurat Mono.

The theme song for the event “Set It Off” showcases these treatments, see below:

From LoL Esports:

MSI is a time for regions to showcase their bold and unique identities and foreshadows the work needed for pros looking to claim a World Championship title of League of Legends, one of the words most popular games/esports. […] The event moves between host regions each year; this year, teams will compete in Busan, South Korea.

This year’s creative theme, “Take Notes,” is a confident, attitude-infused call to action that highlights the epic moves and original style of MSI’s greatest pros. It continues to build out MSI as the bolder, grittier battleground of LoL Esports.

  1. Hey there,

Does anyone know if a studio is responsible for this branding and if so which one, or was the branding done internally at riot?

    Cheers

  2. Thank you, Daniele! Added.

i’m not sure if there’s a stylistic set applied to Colfax but that font doesn’t seem to match.
the “G” in Colfax doesn’t have the tail and the “O” is less circular as well.
even “MSI” written in Colfax looks much narrower unless they were using an extended version which I couldn’t find

  4. Good catch. Colfax is one of the corporate typefaces by Riot Games/LoL Esports. I can’t spot it in any of the images shown here, though. The smaller bits all seem to use Akkurat Mono. Not sure what “MSI” is – stretching Colfax would bring you close, but that’s not it. Colfax has no extended width, and its terminals are horizontal. Credits adjusted.

  5. They didn’t use Colfax, they used Grtsk, predominantly Grtsk Peta.

  6. That’s the one! Thanks a lot, Jibril.
