Art direction for Fantastique, the first retrospective book about French engraving artist Gustave Doré.
It presents engraving techniques and a curated selection of his illustrations, caricatures and paintings – chosen amongst the 3,000 artworks Doré created during his life. The cover was designed around four of his iconic engravings, aiming at offering a comprehensive view of his influences and signature… in one page.
The book measures 210×260mm, counts 480 pages and features 3D embossing, blind embossing, tree foils and print on page edges.

This is so beautiful! Does anybody know what font they used?
Just to add to that last question, it seems that the capital Q, L and K are different from what’s provided in the Saol typeface.
Hi Krysta, most of it is indeed Saol Display: the italics include alternate swash forms for a number of capitals (AKMNQRSTY), see the specimen provided on Schick Toikka’s website.
You have a point about the L: this glyph appears to be added from a different source, or maybe it was custom drawn. Benoit, can you shed light on this question?
Beautiful book. I’m seriously considering preordering this, but I was wondering if they included his any of his Orlando Furioso illustrations? That would be a great help.

Davy, yes, there are ten plates from “Orlando Furioso”.
Hello Florian ! I am about to buy a few styles from Schick & Toikka and you somehow managed to use alternate glyphs from their previews, I wanted to know you did this so I can try different samples and choose the styles I like best, thank you !
With a quick hack: I ctrl-clicked the sample and chose “Inspect” from the menu. In the CSS panel, I added a custom rule for the active element
The specimen pdf is a better way to view all features included in the font … but sure, it doesn’t show all glyphs for all styles.
