Things You Know by Max Friedman & Jamil McGinnis
Things You Know is a book “about Crown Heights, and the ephemerality of place”. Art director Max Friedman initiated the project with Jamil McGinnis. From Friedman’s portfolio website:
Filmmaker Jamil McGinnis and I documented the mile-wide neighborhood of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, New York for two years.
Our publication Things You Know is an intimate 260-page collection of images, writings and found objects from that time, exploring the ephemerality of place and our relationships with those around us. 100% of profits from the project went towards creating a 6-week film photography program with a Crown Heights charter school in April, 2021.
The typography is as diverse as the subject. The cover typography pairs Romie by Margot Lévêque with Helvetica or similar. Inside the book, the blocky F37 Stout by F37 Foundry is paired with the similar Timmons NY by Matt Willey and his Blakey Slab plus a few yet unidentified typefaces.
