Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence (Bantam)
Women in Love is a novel by English author D.H. Lawrence, first published by Thomas Seltzer in 1920. Bantam’s paperback edition of his “greatest novel of erotic love” was issued in 1969, on the occasion of the movie adaptation by Ken Russell, for which Glenda Jackson won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
The ornate capitals with the thin-thick-thin struts and curly terminals is Flirt. Cut by William W. Jackson, it was first cast by the Farmer foundry in New York around 1886. The version used here – in all caps with touching and overlapping glyphs – is probably the adaptation by Photo-Lettering, Bantam’s type supplier of choice. There is no small chance that Flirt was chosen because of its name. All other text is set in Caledonia, for some reason with a bold Baskerville for emphasis.
