Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American author, journalist, comic book writer, and educator. He was a national correspondent at The Atlantic, where he wrote about cultural, social and political issues, particularly regarding African Americans and white supremacy. Newsprint paper was chosen to reflect Coates’ characteristic and his writing style — very realistic, bold, and protest-like.

A flyer is created as an addition to the brochure, where it lists Ta-Nehisi Coates’ publications and advertisements of Black Lives Matter.

Knockout was chosen as a title typeface, inspired by different protest signs. Sometimes signs would be written by bold makers, or sometimes they would be written with thin sharpies, etc. I wanted to indicate this by choosing the Knockout typeface, which has a variety of font weights. Since newspapers are considered as media that deliver written information about current events and truths, New Century Schoolbook was used for body text in order to give the newspaper feeling and deliver easier readability. Since the body texts are a little bit packed, in order to give differentiation between body texts and captions, the modern sans-serif typeface Univers was used for captions.

The brochures have been printed for personal use only since this was a school project done at ArtCenter College of Design.
