Self-Taught Chess for Beginners and Intermediates is a book by Milton Finkelstein (1920–2001). Formerly a high school teacher and principal, Finkelstein served as president of the Marshall Chess Club and Director of the New York City Department of Education.
The original edition was published by Doubleday in 1975, with a jacket design featuring tightly set Baskerville Old Face, integrated into a rook piece. Shown below is the cover of the Ishi Press paperback edition. With Letraset’s Unversity Roman (1972) in center-aligned all-caps, it looks like it went back to the 1970s, too. In fact it was published as recently as 2018.
