U.S. Collier Books paperback edition (1962, 12th printing) of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species, with a cover by Kenneth R. Deardoff. The title and author are set in an italic Bookman with swashes [see comments] while the description is set in News Gothic on both the front and back cover.
Unfortunately, this cover doesn’t utilize the Ch ligature in the author name, and the C swash varies with the emphasis at the top instead of the bottom (somewhat similar to the glyph in Bookman Meola). I can’t quite place the C but it seems as though it is still within the Bookman fam.

Thanks, Annie! This comes close to Photo-Bookman with Swashes or Bookman Italic Swash Series as shown in Photo-Lettering’s One Line catalog. At least these have this top-heavy swash C. Slightly squooshed and with lowered i dots, it could be a match.
The aforementioned styles now have a typeface page of their own: they are grouped together with other Bookmans by Photo-Lettering under the name PLINC Bookman Swash.
