Semiosphere project
Diploma project by Sarah Kral and Erika Mai, made in 2019 at Klasse Cluss, ABK Stuttgart. The project deals with the semiosphere, a concept coined by Yuri Lotman in 1984
What is the relation between language and understanding of the world, or more precisely, between semiotic language(s) and the world?
Our own reflections are written as a dialogue and pay homage to classic play text layout. Divided into five acts, they are united in a book & followed by a subsequent commentary section with contributions by renowned contributors. The two parts face each other as individual conversation partners in a shared cover that unites them as one when folded.
We were very happy to work with two beautiful fonts by Canadian typefoundry Pangram Pangram: the contemporary serif Grafier & Neue Montreal; printed on Metapaper.
Within the book blocks the designers have placed a folded poster, which on the one hand is a building instruction and on the other hand a sketch of their thoughts about the semiosphere.
