“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
— Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
In this essay made as a student project at ECV Bordeaux, I’ve tried to treat the topic of madness and unconventionality, its impact in arts, the mystery of creativity. How can madness influence the creativity process? What is the impact of this exuberance in the society? Among the mentioned artists are painters (Van Gogh, Dalí), sculptors (Claudel), musicians (Coltrane, Ellington), dancers (Nijinsky), as well as philosophers and writers like Antonin Artaud and others.
I absolutely wanted to use Pickle-Standard because it’s perfect to illustrate madness. That font doesn’t really respect the “values” of typography: we’re not used to seeing this kind of lettering. It’s exuberant, and hence very interesting (but also really hard to use!).
Acumin was used for the running text, in a number of widths and weights. It’s well-readable and has a graphic idea that I like. Last but not least, I picked ITC Novarese because it’s just SO elegant. I love that one. I like the contrast between the upright uppercase and the italic lowercase.
Edition of five copies; about a hundred pages; recycled paper 85g; 210×150 mm.
