Dapifer Stencil is used for Nº32 The Old Town. The pub in Clapham, London is one of several neighborhood bars conceived by Darwin & Wallace together with Without.
The stenciled oldstyle slab serif by Darden Studio is used for page headers, in center-aligned lines of all caps. It also is specified for headlines. Text is rendered in Adelle Sans by TypeTogether. For the logo and the physical signs, Without went with a different stencil serif, Pochoir by Yanone.
Without elaborates on the concept of “The Address”:
In a city celebrated for its design, it’s odd how many pubs feel formulaic. Frustrated with the abundance of mediocre, identikit “Gastropubs”, Darwin & Wallace founder Mel Marriott wanted to turn unloved and under-performing sites into brilliant local bars: unique spaces which felt like private addresses; hand-picked (sometimes hand-made) style; inspiring all-day food and drink. Without® began with a naming convention that replaced traditional pub connotations with the feel of private addresses. Identities for each space are built around common typographic principles but each is unique.
