Digital Yiddish Theatre Project

The Digital Yiddish Theatre Project is a consortium of academics and researchers dedicated to exploring new approaches to historical scholarship made possible by digital analysis. A goal on the project was to consciously call back to the visual history of Yiddish theatre performances in ways that felt fresh and engaging, and are only possible because of new technology on the web. The approach to designing their identity and website was to clearly acknowledge historical influences and make use of them.
The site goes all out on display typography, just like turn-of-the-century printers did when producing posters with the contents of a few drawers of physical type—calling back to the broadsheet feel of vintage posters and programs by taking full advantage of the possibilities of modern web typography.
With turn-of-the-century wood block printing as inspiration, Familiar designed a flexible logo that can easily adapt to different contexts by subtracting, adding, or shifting different components.
The visual vocabulary developed for the site’s central blog is versatile enough to adapt to additional projects, and fun enough that enlivens information-dense pages.
