  1. In an interview in the Japanese design magazine MDN Akira Saito, the graphic designer who worked on the Akira books in 1984, mentions that he used a Gothic typeface which he cut the top of for the Akira Logo. He could just have meant a San-serif, but I think it is more probable he was talking about one of the Japanese Gothic typefaces.

  2. I think the title typeface is an altered version of Druk Condensed Super. Some versions of the masthead are different however as the bowl of the R is more curved than Druk.

  3. Hi Paul, there are certainly a number of contemporary fonts that come close, including your suggestion. What rules out Druk Condensed, though, is the fact that it was released in 2014, several decades after the Akira logotype first appeared.

  4. Very happy to see this manga/movie included here, on an artistic basis, but also for the type and layout as well.

    Thank you.

  5. So great to find this! I was looking so hard for this for a scientific project in college! Thank you! :)

  6. Gona and Ishii Gothic

  7. Thanks for your comment! Can you be more specific; where are these Japanese typefaces used? And how is Ishii Gothic different from Ishii Futo Kyokashotai as identified by Akira?

  8. Hello! I’ve just created a fan website dedicated to Akira: akira.fan. I hope your community enjoys it. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.
