  1. The Pilar font includes four different designs for each letter, with the alternates made accessible via Stylistic Sets. In this use, Pavel Kedich combines the Regular Open (Rolling Stone quote) with the Wide Closed (titles) and Wild (“Foreword”, artist names) styles, always in all caps. The “Nine Nine” logo is a mix. While Giorgio Sans, Graphik and Grad are served as webfonts, the texts in Pilar are embedded as SVG files, probably to maintain full control.

Here’s an overview of Pilar’s four designs — Regular Open, Wide Closed, Narrow, Wild — for the Latin caps. All four styles also include Cyrillics, lowercase letters, accented letters, and numerals. In total, the font contains 1,581 glyphs — if you rent it from Fontstand for €3,50/month, that’s less than a quarter cent per glyph.

  2. @Florian: Those G Q Rs are definitely something.

  3. Happy to see they took advantage of the small caps and old style figures OpenType features I put into Grad.
