A sans serif of very irregular shape, moderate contrast, offered at text sizes with lowercase. Origin unclear. Cut by Friedrich Wilhelm Bauer in one size as Mittel Grotesque No. 5 and perhaps first shown in Germany by Dresler as Grotesque No. 396–399, and later by many others, such as Grotesk/Grotesque (Flinsch, c.1861), Grotesque mit Gemeinen (Schelter & Giesecke, c.1862–67), and Englische Patent-Schriften (Genzsch).
