Old Style Antique No. 7 a.k.a. Antique Old
Style No. 7. Issued by Miller &
Richard in the early 1850s [Johnson
1904] or 1860, and credited to Alexander Phemister. A predecessor of
Bookman. [McGrew 1993] At least one size (36pt) had a
diagonal-crossbar e. Available as Old Style
Antique from US foundries as early as 1871 [Ringwalt
1871]. Bruce’s version, offered by 1882, was Antique No.
310 [Parker
1928] Renamed by ATF around 1897 as Old Style Antique No.
40. Renamed by BB&S by around 1907 as Catalog Old
Style.
Cincinnati,
Keystone, and others had large sizes with different designs.
Hansen’s c.1902 version, Stratford Old
Style, has different swash glyphs.
“In 1901 Bruce Type Foundry brought out Bartlett
Oldstyle, based on the small sizes of Bruce’s Antique
No. 310, refitted and otherwise improved. The American Type
Founders Company thought well of Bartlett Oldstyle and
made arrangements with Bruce Type Foundry to sell it to the trade
as Bookman Oldstyle. Both faces were cast at the Bruce
foundry until that plant moved to Jersey City in 1906. […] At the
