Designed by Ed Benguiat, apparently loosely modeled after Walhalla (Klinkhardt, ca. 1900 [Lettera 3]; unconfirmed), or, more likely, after an untitled set of capitals shown in J.M.Bergling’s Art Alphabets and Lettering (1914). Discotheque is shown in 1971 in threeweights plus Outline and Contour variants [PLINC One Liner 1971], but not yet in 1965 [PLINC 1965]. Used already in 1967.
Lettergraphics shows a virtually identical face in a single medium weight as Joe in a 1974 ad and a catalog [Lettergraphics 1968–1975]. Also shown as Sheeba with a low-waisted ‘H’. [Solo 1992]
