A revision of Cheltenham (ATF, 1902). Started together
with ITC
Garamond and ITC
Century, to address the “shortage of ultra weight
typefaces in the text type size ranges. […] After the drawings for
the three ultra weights were completed, in both the roman and
italic versions, it soon became apparent that an intermediate
‘book’ weight, with the same matching lowercase ‘x’ heights,
compatible with the ultra styles, would also be highly useful.” ITC
Cheltenham Ultra and Book, in roman and italic styles, were
announced for September 15, 1975. [U&lc, vol. 2
no. 3] Light and Bold weights were added in 1978, together with a
full range of condensed styles, as well as Outline, Outline Shadow,
and Contour styles. [U&lc, vol. 5 no.
3]
