Marq in use

Marq in use. Originally drawn in 2007. “When a marker’s ink supply is almost exhausted, its heavy line splits into skeletal paths, all locked into the same parallel motion. Marq renders this fleeting effect in precise, digital perpetuity. ¶ Marq is available in two styles: the original; and a later variation in which the spaces between the paths are filled, creating an anachronistic reanimation of the typeface Century Gothic, on whose simple geometry the original Marq’s glyphs are based.” [Nawrot]

The Marq typeface was originally drawn in 2007, intended to appear on the covers of a series of 12″ records released by the label En/Of (DE), but ultimately never used for that purpose.

Its forms derive from experiments with the marker pen, whose thick, angular, strokes are often used to write track names, by hand, on duplicated CDs and ‘white label’ vinyls. When a marker’s ink supply is almost exhausted, its heavy line splits into skeletal paths, all locked into the same parallel motion. Marq renders this fleeting effect in precise, digital perpetuity.

Marq is available in two styles. After finishing the original version, Nawrot added a solid style named Marq Alt, “creating an anachronistic reanimation of the typeface Century Gothic, on whose simple geometry the original Marq’s glyphs are based”. These posters from 2008 use both styles.

Jaan Evart. License: All Rights Reserved.

This post was originally published at Fonts In Use

This is how OCCII describes itself, which is reflected in it’s 2009 yearbook-like calendary book. The book, designed by Matthias Kreutzer and Jens Schildt (Our Polite Society), features a wild mixture of papers, inks and type that are combined thoughtfully for each month. The twelve typefaces, papers and inks are, in order of their appearance, Hobo (Reviva Offset, PMS 267), Dom (Novatech Gloss, PMS 355), Barnum (Dito, PMS 032), Brody (Hello Mat, PMS 641), Storybook (Montana, PMS 808), Chianti (Bioset, PMS 806), Marq (Munken Lynx, 100K), Helvetica (Royal Print Gloss, PMS 871), American Typewriter (Alga Carta Ivoor, PMS 7475), Belwe (Caxton, PMS 811), hand-drawn Lettering (Amber Graphic, 100K) and last, but not least furious Comic Sans (Furioso, PMS 021). It collects the monthly newsletters that were released thoughout 2009. There is also a series of posters.
