The Helvetica Compressed series (not to be confused with Helvetica Narrow, Condensed, Compact, Inserat, or Plakat) is significantly different enough from the rest of the larger Helvetica series to have its own page. The Compressed and Extra Compressed were designed by Matthew Carter at Mergenthaler Linotype for the Linofilm typesetter in 1966. The Ultra Compressed was designed by Hans-Jürg Hunziker under Carter’s supervision, and released in 1968.
Bitstream’s digital version is named Swiss 911. Neue Helvetica includes nine (upright) Compressed weights. These are rounder than the original Helvetica Compressed.
