Susan Kare created the original bitmap version in 1984 for the original Macintosh. Initially named Elefont. It was the first font created for the Mac and was used as a system font for many years. Bigelow & Holmes produced the scalable TrueType version in 1991.

Sysfont (Alina Sava, 2021) is a recreation of the original bitmap version. Chicago Kare (Duane King, 2024) is another one that claims to be faithful to the original. See also DePixel (ingoFonts, 1999).
