Originally designed by Tobias Frere-Jones in 1996 for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Redeveloped in collaboration with Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 2000, with contributions from Jesse Ragan and Joshua Darden. Initially named Whitney Sans [Hoefler]. Released to the public in 2004. Greek and Cyrillic were made with the input of Gerry Leonidas and Maxim Zhukov, respectively [Frere-Jones], and announced in 2010 [H&FJ]. Extended with Narrow styles in 2016, made together with Sara Soskolne [Frere-Jones].
